Great Lighting Options to Consider for Your Apartment

Lighting is one of the most important pieces of the interior design puzzle. It is one of the elements that can easily make or break your space, especially if there is a lack of natural light or minimal floor space in your apartment. In these cases, lighting will then play an even bigger role in how you and your guest experience your space. Thus, selecting the perfect light fixtures can be a challenge for apartment dwellers. Perhaps, you might have found the perfect apartment in wangsa maju, but the natural light the space receives leaves much to be desired. With these tips in hand, you can easily tweak your lighting options in the space to address issues you have with your space (such as the lack of natural light).

Read on for some of the best lighting options you can consider implementing in your apartment to turn it from dreary and gloomy into a well-lit abode.

Aim high with interesting ceiling fixtures

Incorporating an eye-catching ceiling fixture in your space will help open it up in many ways. It will help draw the attention of the eye upwards and this opens up your space by adding some perceived height. A bold, or even over-scale, ceiling light fixture not only adds illuminations and dram, but also trick your eye into thinking there is more space than there actually is. Consider adding a grand chandelier or a quirky ultra-modern piece. However, don't put too much focus on your main ceiling fixture that you can totally nix all over lighting sources. Don't commit the heinous crime of using only a single ceiling fixture. This will do nothing to enhance your space as these lighting fixtures only add ambient lighting. Remember that ceiling fixtures don't work as stand alone, especially when you already lack natural light.

Consider sconces to supplement overhead lighting

Sconces are a great way of adding task lighting to your space. This is especially true in smaller spaces, such as in bathroom or powder room. With smaller spaces, like around the vanity, you might think on foregoing all lighting options and stick to just one overhead light. The skinny patch of wall will tempt you into forgoing wall lighting altogether. However, this can end up making your lighting look even more harsh and overpowering, which ends up making the space feel even smaller that it already is. Adding some wall lights to supplement overhead lighting, lamps and natural light, can help bring balance to your space, making it more open and relaxing.

Choose your lampshades wisely

Lampshades are more than just decorative accessories and accents. Believe it or not, they will actually make a big impact on your space, especially in terms of the quality of light you get out of your lamp. So, when you are choosing a lampshade, do keep in mind your lighting goals. For example, lighter (and more opaque) lampshades will provide ambient lighting an allow more into the whole room, while darker lampshades will concentrate the light above and below the lamp, providing accent lighting and making the lighting more localized. However, don't think that you must have a lampshade with your lamps. You can forego this traditional option and instead opt for more intersting fixtures such as lights with glass shades, or even exposed Edison-style lighting.

Warm up to incandescent light

The tone of the lighting is also important. Your lighting should have the goal of making your space feel inviting (unless of course, your end goal is to make your space look like a cold, sterile waiting room). If calming and relaxation is the goal you have in mind, try sticking to lightbulbs that emit soft yellow light. These are less harsh can helps send signals to your body, allowing your body to relax and have better sleep. As blue light suppresses melatonin (a hormone which promotes sleep), even the latest gadgets have "night modes" where the screen is automatically set to a warmer more yellow tone after dark. To achieve more yellow lighting, you should look for incandescent bulbs, which are generally lower on the Kelvin scale compared to other lightbulbs.

Go vertical

If you are short on square footage in your space, why not tae advantage of height instead? If your apartment lacks surface space, you can consider tall floor lamps because they don't take up much needed floor or tabletop surface space while still providing plenty of light. What's more is that they also help disperse light in the room while also providing illumination in dim nooks and crannies. You can even consider choosing a lamp that multitask: for example, lamps that have a top lamp as well as a task light midway up the lighting fixture. This allows you to get the most out of every lighting fixture.

Stay in control

In order for your lighting to be truly flexible, you'll want to incorporate dimmers and dimmer switches wherever wherever possible. Putting your lighting fixtures on dimmers allow you to instantly change the mood of the room, allowing you to regulate light intensity based on the time of the day or the ambience you'd like to create. To make life easier, you should thus choose to by lamps that have high light / low light switches (or even those with 2- or 3-way bulbs). You should also consider having multiple circuits in the room so that your lights can be dimmed independently of each other. This way, you can dim some lights, while still keeping other lights brighter.

Remember: form and function

While function is key when you are choosing your lighting options for your space, do remember that you also need to keep the form and fashion in mind, especially to allow your lights to seamlessly tie in with your overall aesthetic. Think of your lighting as a piece of decor. For example, lighting comes in a myriad of different material and finishes, and this should complement the furniture and decor pieces throughout your space.
